Yin yoga is the mindful practice of surrendering in poses for longer amounts of time, up to five minutes, noticing the subtle and greater sensations that arise. The breath is the centering focus, and each posture can become a mini meditation. Yin yoga is ideal for fascial release, structural adjustment, organ nourishment, compression and release of joints, relinquishing tension and toxins, grounding the floating mind … and so much more. I blend what I have learned about the philosophy and eight limbs of hatha yoga with the eastern wisdom of Chinese medicine and balancing energies. I often employ pranayama, breathing techniques and practices, and often have a physical or spiritual theme for each class, such as “heart, shoulder and chest openers,” more physical, to a “metta meditation,” spreading loving kindness to self and others, more ethereal.
It is a beautiful balancing antidote to a frenetic world; one that stimulates the relaxation response, and brings us into the parasympathetic nervous system as well as alpha brainwave states. In yoga always culminates in a long yoga nidra, or relaxing sivasana in corpse pose.
This is karma yoga, done with love for free.
These recorded classes would not be possible without the generous support of Cheryl, Charlene and Mike at Pendo Studios.
I hope this is food for the body and for the soul.
